It is with great sadness, and on behalf of his family, that we announce the passing of Tony Stone on Friday, 5 December.

Tony will be remembered by many as the long‑standing Honorary Treasurer of both the Bristol Premier Combination and the Bristol & District Leagues, where he worked tirelessly to ensure clubs maintained their accounts with integrity. His influence extended far beyond league administration, playing a vital role within the GFA management structure and helping to shape the County Association into what it is today.

Tony’s service to the game was exceptional. Elected to the GFA Council in 1970, he became a Life Member and later served as Finance Director from 2005 to 2019. He also contributed significantly as a member of the General Purposes Committee and the Rules Revision & League Sanction Committee.

His football journey began as a player with Bristol Manor Farm, until injury in 1969 led him to qualify as a referee the following year. He progressed quickly, officiating in the Football Combination during the 1979/80 season and serving as a Football League assistant referee from 1980/81 until his retirement in 1991.

After stepping away from refereeing, Tony returned to administration, serving as Treasurer for the Bristol Regional Sunday League, and later for the Bristol Premier Combination and Bristol & District Leagues. He also held the position of Director at the Western League and supported clubs and leagues across the region through ground grading inspections.

Tony was a devoted servant to the Association and to football. His dedication, wisdom, and friendship enriched the game and the community, and his absence will be deeply felt throughout the football community.

A minute’s applause will be held before kick‑off in both the Bristol Premier Combination and Bristol & District fixtures this Saturday in his honour.
