FIVE-GOAL BAKER STUNS CRIBBS AS LEAGUE CUP DELIVERS MORE DRAMA
Old Sodbury and Made For Ever survive penalty shootouts, Hallen hit six and Greyfriars celebrate their first league victory as the League Cup quarter-final picture takes shape.
The Uhlsport Bristol Premier Combination League Cup returned with a bang as the second round produced spectacular individual performances, penalty shootout drama and another series of impressive results for Division One clubs against Premier Division opposition.
The outstanding individual performance of the weekend came from AFC Mangotsfield Rocks Reserves striker Ollie Baker, who scored all five goals in a remarkable 5-2 victory over Cribbs Reserves and completed his entire haul before half-time.
Elsewhere, Old Sodbury maintained their unbeaten competitive start by surviving a penalty shootout at Patchway Town, while Made For Ever continued their impressive cup form with a shootout victory over Longwell Green Sports Reserves.
Hallen Reserves were in ruthless form against Lion, Winterbourne United knocked out Shirehampton Reserves, and AEK Boco Reserves produced another impressive result against Premier Division opposition.
With holders Bristol Barcelona already eliminated in the opening round, the competition is guaranteed a new winner this season.
There was plenty happening in the league too.
Iron Acton returned to winning ways with five goals against Olveston United, Greyfriars Athletic recorded their first league victory of the campaign and Lawrence Weston produced an emphatic away performance in Division One.
It was another weekend that demonstrated just how quickly fortunes can change in local football.
PREMIER DIVISION
GREYFRIARS FINALLY HAVE LIFT-OFF
Greyfriars Athletic 1 Nicholas Wanderers 0
After a difficult opening to the season, Greyfriars Athletic finally have their first Premier Division victory.
Having lost their opening five league fixtures, Greyfriars had shown signs of improvement with a remarkable 4-4 draw against Iron Acton the previous weekend.
This time, they went one better.
Jayden French scored the decisive goal in the 39th minute as Greyfriars edged Nicholas Wanderers 1-0 to collect a hugely welcome three points.
It was also their first league clean sheet of the season, providing further encouragement after several difficult defensive afternoons.
French had already found the net against Cribbs Reserves and Iron Acton earlier in the campaign, and his latest contribution proved the most valuable yet.
For Nicholas Wanderers, it was another frustrating result following their narrow defeat against Shirehampton Reserves.
For Greyfriars, however, this was an important breakthrough.
A point against Iron Acton followed by three against Nicholas Wanderers represents a welcome change in momentum.
FIVE-STAR ACTON RETURN TO WINNING WAYS
Iron Acton 5 Olveston United 1
Iron Acton returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion with a convincing 5-1 victory over Olveston United.
After successive high-scoring draws against Old Sodbury and Greyfriars Athletic, Acton produced a much more commanding performance to collect all three points.
Todd Carter led the scoring with a brace, while Alex Lambert, Dean Preddie and Joe Wintle also found the net.
The hosts described it as a superb squad performance against strong opposition, with their midfield particularly influential throughout the afternoon.
Joe Wintle collected the Man of the Match award following an excellent display in the middle of the park, adding a goal to his contribution.
For Olveston, Alex Foulner was the scorer on a disappointing afternoon.
The visitors were candid in their assessment afterwards, describing their performance as poor from start to finish.
It was a welcome return to winning ways for Iron Acton, who remain unbeaten in league competition.
DIVISION ONE
WESTON HIT FOUR ON THE ROAD
Longwell Green Sports Development 0 Lawrence Weston 4
Lawrence Weston produced one of their most convincing performances of the season with a comprehensive 4-0 victory away to Longwell Green Sports Development.
The visitors started brightly and established an early advantage, with their attacking play causing problems from the outset.
Weston felt they should have been further ahead by half-time after creating several promising opportunities.
They made sure of the result after the interval.
Three further goals followed as Lawrence Weston completed an emphatic victory.
Montel Riches and Jake Morgan shared the goalscoring honours, each scoring twice.
It was an important result for Weston after several closely contested matches had previously gone against them.
Four goals, a clean sheet and three points provided exactly the response they had been looking for.
HALLEN COMPLETE DRAMATIC LATE COMEBACK
Pucklechurch Sports 3 Hallen A 3
Pucklechurch Sports were left wondering how they had failed to collect all three points after surrendering a two-goal advantage in a dramatic 3-3 draw with Hallen A.
The hosts could hardly have made a better start.
A penalty inside the opening minute gave Pucklechurch the opportunity to take an immediate lead, and Neco Wilson confidently converted.
But the advantage lasted barely a minute.
Some questionable defending allowed Hallen to equalise almost immediately, setting the tone for an unpredictable afternoon.
Pucklechurch gradually began taking control and restored their lead midway through the first half.
Ronnie Godfrey tried his luck from distance and was rewarded with an excellent strike that sailed into the net.
The hosts continued to enjoy the better of the attacking play after the break.
Dave Paterson then produced a clinical finish to make it 3-1, seemingly putting Pucklechurch in a commanding position.
With ten minutes remaining, the hosts looked set to end their recent losing run with a victory.
Hallen, however, had other ideas.
Using their physical presence and aerial strength, the visitors began applying sustained pressure.
A goal from a corner reduced the deficit to 3-2 with five minutes remaining.
Then, as Pucklechurch tired under the pressure, Hallen capitalised on some loose defending to snatch an equaliser right at the end.
Aaron Anglin and Emmanuel Gabez, who scored twice, were Hallen's goalscorers.
Pucklechurch were left with mixed emotions.
A point ended their losing run, but having led 3-1 so late in the contest, they will feel this was a victory that slipped away.
For Hallen A, it was an excellent demonstration of persistence and determination.
LEAGUE CUP SECOND ROUND
BAKER SCORES FIVE AS ROCKS STUN CRIBBS
AFC Mangotsfield Rocks Reserves 5 Cribbs Reserves 2
If there was one performance that stole the headlines this weekend, it belonged to Ollie Baker.
The AFC Mangotsfield Rocks Reserves striker produced an extraordinary individual display, scoring all five goals as his side knocked Premier Division Cribbs Reserves out of the League Cup.
And remarkably, every one of those goals came before half-time.
Baker completed his hat-trick inside just 21 minutes as the Division One hosts tore into their opponents.
He wasn't finished.
Two more goals followed before the interval, leaving the Rocks an astonishing 5-0 ahead at half-time.
Cribbs managed to score twice after the break, but the damage had already been done.
Baker's five-goal performance capped an excellent run of goalscoring form.
He had previously struck twice in the 2-2 draw against De Veys before adding another in the 3-0 victory over Lion.
Now five more in a single afternoon.
For Mangotsfield, this was another outstanding result against higher-division opposition and a major statement of their League Cup intentions.
For Cribbs, who had entered the weekend following an impressive 5-0 league victory at Thornbury Town Reserves, it was a sharp reminder of the unpredictable nature of knockout football.
Five goals from one player.
Five before half-time.
A performance that will take some beating this season.
MADE FOR EVER HOLD THEIR NERVE FROM THE SPOT
Made For Ever 1 Longwell Green Sports Reserves 1
Made For Ever won 4-3 on penalties
Made For Ever's remarkable cup journey continued as the Division One newcomers overcame Longwell Green Sports Reserves on penalties.
Having already knocked Iron Acton out of the League Cup and recorded an impressive County Cup victory over Greyfriars Athletic, Made For Ever were once again facing Premier Division opposition.
And once again, they found a way through.
After two Saturdays without a fixture, Made For Ever returned to action in a scrappy encounter that finished level after normal time.
Patryk Rajczyk scored for the hosts, while Abulfazl Atapoor continued his productive goalscoring form with Longwell's reply.
Neither side could find a decisive breakthrough, sending the tie to penalties.
Made For Ever held their nerve to win the shootout 4-3 and secure their place in the next round.
Dan Tutt collected the Man of the Match award.
It was not necessarily their most fluent performance of the campaign, but knockout football is ultimately about finding a way to progress.
And Made For Ever are becoming increasingly good at doing exactly that.
OLD SODBURY SURVIVE PATCHWAY SHOOTOUT
Patchway Town 1 Old Sodbury 1
Old Sodbury won 5-3 on penalties
Old Sodbury's unbeaten start to the season survived another stern examination as they edged past Patchway Town in a dramatic League Cup encounter.
Patchway made an excellent start.
Just five minutes had been played when Keelan Webb delivered another dangerous corner and Tom Butt was on hand to give the hosts the lead.
But Old Sodbury responded almost immediately.
Four minutes later, a corner at the opposite end resulted in an unfortunate Patchway own goal, bringing the visitors level at 1-1.
It had been a frantic opening.
Patchway were forced into an early change following a head injury to Webb, with Mekhi Duncan introduced, although Webb later returned to the action.
The sides remained level at half-time after an entertaining first period.
Old Sodbury continued pushing for a winner, but had efforts ruled out following decisions they disputed.
Neither side could find the decisive goal during normal time.
Penalties would settle it.
And Old Sodbury were flawless.
Jordan Hickman stepped up first and converted, followed by Seb Woodward, Owen Bell, Kane Head and Matty Tanner.
Five penalties. Five goals.
A 5-3 shootout victory sent the Old Sods into the next round.
Owen Bell collected the Man of the Match award after an influential performance in which he was described as having run the game.
For Patchway, it was a frustrating exit after another competitive display against strong opposition.
For Old Sodbury, their unbeaten run continues.
They may not have produced the attacking fireworks seen earlier in the season, but they demonstrated another valuable quality.
The ability to hold their nerve when it matters.
WINTERBOURNE END SHIREHAMPTON'S CUP RUN
Shirehampton Reserves 0 Winterbourne United 2
Winterbourne United continued their impressive cup form with a 2-0 victory away to Shirehampton Reserves.
Having already knocked Bristol Barcelona out of the League Cup in the opening round, Winterbourne claimed another notable scalp.
David Herbert and Finlay Merrett scored the goals as the visitors secured their place in the next round.
Merrett had previously scored a hat-trick against Pucklechurch Sports in the County Cup and continued his excellent scoring form here.
The victory was particularly impressive given Shirehampton's strong opening to the league campaign.
Winterbourne, however, have repeatedly demonstrated that their cup performances can be very different from their early league results.
Two goals, a clean sheet and another knockout victory.
Their League Cup adventure continues.
HALLEN HIT SIX TO CRUISE THROUGH
Hallen Reserves 6 Lion 1
Hallen Reserves continued their impressive scoring form in knockout competition with a comprehensive 6-1 victory over Lion.
After putting seven past AEK Boco Reserves in the County Cup, Hallen produced another dominant attacking display.
George Binding led the scoring with two goals, while Kai Caps and Mason Jones also found the net.
The hosts' strength in depth was evident too.
Ayrton French and Scott Cousins both came off the bench to score, completing the six-goal haul.
Anas Koori grabbed Lion's consolation.
Hallen's recent cup performances have been particularly eye-catching.
Seven goals against AEK Boco.
Six against Lion.
Thirteen goals across those two knockout matches.
They will head into the next round with plenty of confidence.
HOLDEN DOUBLE SENDS FRENCHAY THROUGH
Thornbury Town Reserves 1 DRG Frenchay 2
DRG Frenchay completed a quick-fire double over Thornbury Town Reserves with a 2-1 victory in the League Cup.
The two sides had met in league competition only the previous weekend, when Frenchay ran out emphatic 6-2 winners.
Thornbury produced a much more competitive performance this time, but the outcome was ultimately the same.
Oliver Holden proved the difference, scoring both Frenchay goals to secure progression.
Thornbury managed a goal of their own but could not force the tie beyond normal time.
For Frenchay, it was another positive result in a strong spell across league and cup competition.
For Thornbury, it was a second defeat against the same opponents in successive meetings.
BOCO CONTINUE IMPRESSIVE CUP FORM
Bedminster Down 1 AEK Boco Reserves 4
AEK Boco Reserves produced another impressive performance against Premier Division opposition, defeating Bedminster Down 4-1 to reach the next round.
Boco arrived full of confidence following their dramatic 4-3 Division One victory over Patchway Town.
And they carried that momentum into knockout football.
Joseph Burchill, Harrison Rogers, Ellis Bodman and James Whiting shared the goals as Boco produced a convincing attacking display.
The visitors also had two standout individual performances.
New signing Liam Dibble and Reily Podlunzy were jointly awarded Man of the Match following excellent contributions.
Boco's progression puts them in an intriguing position as the League Cup moves towards its latter stages, with the club also raising the possibility of a bye into the semi-finals depending on how the draw develops.
For Bedminster Down, attention now returns to league matters.
For Boco, another cup victory has added to an increasingly promising start to the season.
THE LEAGUE PICTURE BEGINS TO SHIFT
Although cup football dominated the weekend, the league fixtures provided several important developments.
Iron Acton's 5-1 victory over Olveston United strengthened their position near the top of the Premier Division and extended their unbeaten league start.
Old Sodbury remain unbeaten too, although their attention this weekend was firmly on progressing in the League Cup.
Bristol Barcelona also remain unbeaten in league competition despite their earlier cup exit.
But perhaps the most welcome league result belonged to Greyfriars Athletic.
After such a difficult opening, a draw against Iron Acton followed by victory over Nicholas Wanderers has finally given them something to build upon.
In Division One, Lawrence Weston's emphatic victory at Longwell Green Sports Development offered encouragement, while Hallen A's late comeback against Pucklechurch Sports demonstrated the competitive nature of the division.
With clubs having played different numbers of fixtures, the league tables remain far from settled.
CUP DREAMS ALIVE AS QUARTER-FINAL PICTURE TAKES SHAPE
The second round of the League Cup has produced some fascinating storylines.
AFC Mangotsfield Rocks Reserves have delivered one of the outstanding results of the competition, inspired by Ollie Baker's extraordinary five-goal performance.
Made For Ever continue to demonstrate their ability to compete against Premier Division opposition.
AEK Boco Reserves have also shown that Division One clubs should not be underestimated.
Old Sodbury remain unbeaten and have added penalty shootout composure to their impressive attacking reputation.
Hallen Reserves are scoring freely in cup competition, while Winterbourne United and DRG Frenchay have both continued their strong knockout form.
And with holders Bristol Barcelona already eliminated, every remaining side knows that a new name will be engraved on the trophy.
The opening weeks have already produced goals, comebacks, surprises and plenty of controversy.
But as the League Cup moves towards the business end of the competition, the stakes are only getting higher.
The league tables will continue to take shape in the weeks ahead.
For those still standing in the cup, however, the prospect of silverware is beginning to feel a little closer.
And if the first two rounds are anything to go by, there will be plenty more drama before the trophy is lifted.
