OLD SODBURY GO TOP AS CHIPPING SODBURY WIN TITLE SHOWDOWN AND LION ROAR TO FIRST VICTORY
Old Sodbury take Premier Division top spot with two games in hand, Chipping Sodbury Reserves win a crucial Division One clash and Nicholas Wanderers claim local derby bragging rights.
The battle for supremacy in the Uhlsport Bristol Premier Combination took another dramatic turn this weekend as Old Sodbury climbed to the top of the Premier Division, Chipping Sodbury Town Reserves won a crucial top of the table encounter in Division One and Lion finally celebrated their first victory of the season.
With difficult weather conditions affecting matches across the area, there was no shortage of goals, comebacks and surprises.
Old Sodbury produced a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Longwell Green Sports Reserves to leapfrog Iron Acton into first place, moving a point clear with two games in hand.
Acton's first league defeat came at Bristol Barcelona, where a reserve team striker was pressed into service as an emergency goalkeeper before the hosts secured a dramatic 3-2 victory.
Elsewhere, Nicholas Wanderers produced an outstanding first half display to defeat neighbours Hanham Athletic 4-1 at Vicarage Road, while Hallen Reserves continued their impressive form with a convincing win at DRG Frenchay.
Cribbs Reserves and Shirehampton Reserves also collected important victories as the Premier Division's leading sides continued to establish themselves.
In Division One, Chipping Sodbury Reserves defeated AEK Boco Reserves 2-1 to take over at the summit, Made For Ever recovered from a two goal deficit to win 6-2 at Pucklechurch Sports, and Patchway Town claimed a dramatic victory at Hallen A.
But one of the biggest celebrations came at Lion, where a 6-3 victory over Oldland Abbotonians Reserves secured their first league points of the season and lifted them off the bottom of the table.
PREMIER DIVISION
OLD SODBURY TAKE TOP SPOT WITH GUTSY AWAY VICTORY
Longwell Green Sports Reserves 1 Old Sodbury 2
Old Sodbury's unbeaten Premier Division campaign continued with a hard earned 2-1 victory away to Longwell Green Sports Reserves, a result that lifted them to the top of the table.
After weeks of spectacular attacking displays, this was a different sort of challenge for Old Sods.
Difficult weather conditions made fluent football hard to produce, and the visitors had to rely on organisation, determination and quality from set pieces.
Sam Reeves and Jordan Hickman scored the goals that ultimately secured all three points.
Longwell responded through Paul Coles in the 19th minute, quickly finding a way back into the contest after conceding the opening goal.
But Old Sodbury's set-piece delivery proved decisive.
Owen Bell provided the assists for both goals, producing two excellent deliveries while also helping his side maintain their shape in midfield.
Bell's performance earned him the Man of the Match award.
Longwell acknowledged that they had been undone by two set plays and struggled to regain control after falling 2-1 behind.
Tom Sullivan collected their Man of the Match award following a committed performance in difficult conditions.
For Old Sodbury, it was not the free scoring display that has characterised much of their season.
But it was another important victory.
Five wins and a draw from six league fixtures have taken them to 16 points, one clear of Iron Acton, despite having played two games fewer.
Old Sods are now the team everyone else is chasing.
BARCELONA END ACTON'S UNBEATEN LEAGUE RUN
Bristol Barcelona 3 Iron Acton 2
Bristol Barcelona produced one of the most significant results of the Premier Division season so far, defeating Iron Acton 3-2 to end the visitors' unbeaten league record.
And the victory came in extraordinary circumstances.
Barcelona were forced into a last minute goalkeeping change after regular goalkeeper Dragon withdrew the evening before the match.
With no recognised replacement available, reserve team striker Dan Lamb received an unexpected call up, not to lead the attack, but to play in goal.
His afternoon could hardly have started more dramatically.
A goalkeeping mistake inside the opening minute allowed Iron Acton to take the lead, with Todd Carter on the scoresheet.
Acton were already dealing with significant selection problems, having lost Dean Preddie and Alex Lambert to injuries sustained during the previous weekend's victory over Olveston United.
Despite those absences, they made the perfect start.
Barcelona gradually worked their way back into the contest.
Mubarak Suraj equalised in the 25th minute, before Reece Matthews struck to put the hosts 2-1 ahead.
Acton refused to surrender and found another way back into the match when Barcelona conceded an own goal, the ball finding the net off the crossbar.
At 2-2, the contest was finely balanced.
But Barcelona had another surprise in store.
Josh White, called up from the reserves and introduced from the bench, struck in the 80th minute to restore the home side's advantage.
This time, Barcelona held on.
It was an impressive victory for a side that had been forced to improvise in one of the most important positions on the pitch.
For Iron Acton, the defeat brought their unbeaten league run to an end and cost them top spot.
For Barcelona, it was another statement of intent.
They remain unbeaten in league competition and sit just three points behind Old Sodbury with a game in hand.
WHITTAKER HAT-TRICK INSPIRES SHIREHAMPTON
Bedminster Down 3 Shirehampton Reserves 5
Shirehampton Reserves returned to winning ways in spectacular fashion with a 5-3 victory away to Bedminster Down.
Jordan Whittaker was the outstanding figure, scoring a superb second half hat-trick.
Shirehampton opened the scoring through Adam Rees in the 17th minute, before Freddie Peglar added a second four minutes after the interval.
Then Whittaker took centre stage.
His first arrived in the 58th minute, followed by another just five minutes later.
The striker completed his hat-trick in the 83rd minute to round off an excellent individual performance.
Bedminster Down contributed fully to an entertaining eight goal encounter.
Henry Colston scored twice, with Trey Bartlett also on target.
Colston provided two assists, while Bartlett contributed another as the hosts continued to create opportunities.
Jack Prosser collected Bedminster's Man of the Match award.
Despite scoring three times, Bedminster were unable to contain Shirehampton's attacking threat.
For the visitors, the result was an important response after their narrow league defeat at Old Sodbury.
Shirehampton now have 12 points from six league fixtures and remain firmly involved among the Premier Division's leading sides.
CRIBBS COME FROM BEHIND TO BEAT OLVESTON
Cribbs Reserves 4 Olveston United 1
Cribbs Reserves continued their impressive league form with a convincing 4-1 victory over Olveston United at Mile Straight.
The visitors made the brighter start, with James Brock opening the scoring after just nine minutes.
But Cribbs responded quickly.
Andrew Forward levelled in the 15th minute, restoring parity and setting the hosts on their way.
Aaron Coleman then struck in the 35th minute to put Cribbs ahead.
Liam Cann added a third just before half time, scoring in the 44th minute to give the home side a commanding advantage at the interval.
Coleman completed his brace in the 65th minute, making it 4-1 and ending any realistic hopes of an Olveston comeback.
It was another excellent attacking performance from Cribbs, who have recovered strongly since their difficult opening fixture of the season.
Coleman continues to enjoy a productive campaign in front of goal, while Forward and Cann also made valuable contributions.
The victory moves Cribbs onto 13 points from six matches, level with Bristol Barcelona and firmly in the early chasing pack.
PARRY HAT-TRICK FIRES HALLEN TO IMPRESSIVE AWAY WIN
DRG Frenchay 1 Hallen Reserves 4
Hallen Reserves continued their impressive recent form with a commanding 4-1 victory away to DRG Frenchay.
Archie Parry was the star of the afternoon, scoring a hat-trick to lead the visitors to another emphatic result.
William Bolshaw added Hallen's fourth as the visitors produced a clinical attacking display.
Frenchay, whose league campaign has not started as strongly as they had hoped, found themselves facing another difficult afternoon.
Emiel Aiken scored their consolation in the 80th minute.
The hosts made several changes during the second half, with Mohammad Hashemi, Tijan Janneh and James Roberts all introduced as they attempted to find a route back into the contest.
But Hallen's advantage was already decisive.
Parry's hat-trick continued an outstanding personal run after his three goal display against AEK Boco Reserves in county cup competition.
Hallen have also scored freely in recent cup matches, and that confidence is now translating into their league performances.
With seven points from four league games, they have matches in hand on several of the teams above them.
WANDERERS CLAIM LOCAL DERBY BRAGGING RIGHTS
Hanham Athletic 1 Nicholas Wanderers 4
Nicholas Wanderers produced a superb first-half performance to claim an emphatic 4-1 victory over local rivals Hanham Athletic at Vicarage Road.
Played in atrocious weather conditions, the match was heavily influenced by a strong wind running down the pitch.
Wanderers enjoyed the advantage of the wind during the first half, although it was Hanham who initially made the stronger start.
The hosts controlled the early exchanges before Nicholas gradually worked their way into the contest.
Once they found their rhythm, they were ruthless.
Captain Ross Beazer opened the scoring, with Jordan West adding two goals and stand-in striker Jack Deacon producing a spectacular long-range effort.
By half time, Wanderers had established an astonishing 4-0 advantage.
Despite the scoreline, goalkeeper Mitch Norman had also played an important role, producing several valuable saves to prevent Hanham from finding a way back into the match.
The second half was a different story.
With the wind now in their favour, Hanham began applying sustained pressure and quickly reduced the deficit through Alfie Clarke.
That goal gave the hosts renewed confidence.
They began controlling possession and forcing Wanderers into a more defensive approach.
But the visitors stood firm.
Their back four and midfield worked tirelessly to protect the advantage, surviving several dangerous moments before seeing out the contest.
Antonio David Ruiz Hinestroza collected Wanderers' Man of the Match award after an excellent first start for the club.
The coaching staff described his display on the right wing as "mature, clever and worked his socks off."
For Nicholas Wanderers, it was a much-needed victory after a frustrating sequence of results.
The three points lifted them to seventh place and provided a welcome confidence boost ahead of their next fixture against Hallen Reserves at Dundridge Farm.
For Hanham, the result was a disappointing afternoon despite their improved second-half display.
THORNBURY END WINTERBOURNE'S WINNING RUN
Thornbury Town Reserves 3 Winterbourne United 2
Thornbury Town Reserves produced an important 3-2 victory over Winterbourne United to bring the visitors' recent winning run to an end.
Sam Hussey led the scoring for Thornbury with two goals, while substitute Josh Morris also came off the bench to find the net.
Winterbourne replied through Callum Wilson and substitute Finley Mainstone.
Having enjoyed several impressive cup performances in recent weeks, Winterbourne arrived with confidence, but Thornbury proved the stronger side on the afternoon.
The victory provided a welcome boost for Thornbury after a difficult sequence of results, including recent defeats against DRG Frenchay and Cribbs Reserves.
For Winterbourne, it was a reminder that their excellent cup form has not always been matched by results in the Premier Division.
DIVISION ONE
CHIPPING SODBURY WIN TOP OF THE TABLE SHOWDOWN
AEK Boco Reserves 1 Chipping Sodbury Town Reserves 2
Chipping Sodbury Town Reserves produced one of their most significant victories of the season with a 2-1 success away to AEK Boco Reserves.
The two sides entered the weekend occupying the leading positions in Division One, with Boco having climbed to the summit following their extraordinary 12-1 victory over De Veys.
Chipping Sodbury, however, had been building momentum of their own.
After defeating Pucklechurch Sports and Patchway Town in successive league fixtures, the Sods arrived knowing another victory would take them above Boco.
And they delivered.
Sam Hayden proved the match winner, scoring both goals for the visitors.
James Whiting found the net for Boco, but the hosts could not prevent Chipping Sodbury from taking all three points.
It was a particularly impressive result given Boco's prolific recent form.
Having scored twelve goals in their previous league match, the hosts were restricted to just one this time.
For Chipping Sodbury, the victory completed an excellent turnaround following their difficult opening weeks in cup competition.
The Sods now sit top of Division One with 12 points from four league matches, maintaining a perfect record.
Boco remain second on ten points from five games.
Made For Ever, however, are also firmly in the picture with nine points from just three matches.
The Division One promotion race is beginning to look fascinating.
PATCHWAY FIGHT BACK TWICE TO EDGE HALLEN
Hallen A 2 Patchway Town 3
Patchway Town produced a determined comeback to secure an excellent 3-2 victory away to Hallen A.
The hosts opened the scoring in the 25th minute, with Aidan Burt and Rupert Mall their goal scorers during the afternoon.
Patchway responded ten minutes later.
Sam Merrick, making his first start, marked the occasion with an important equaliser in the 35th minute.
The sides went into half-time level at 1-1.
But Hallen struck almost immediately after the restart, regaining the lead in the 46th minute.
Patchway again found themselves chasing the game.
And once again, they responded.
Tom Butt continued his excellent goalscoring form by equalising in the 66th minute to make it 2-2.
The decisive moment arrived eight minutes from time.
Patchway were awarded a penalty and Tasman Rook stepped forward to convert, putting the visitors ahead for the first time.
Hallen's afternoon was made more difficult by the dismissal of Paul Francis following two yellow cards.
Patchway held on to secure an important three points.
After consecutive defeats against AEK Boco Reserves and Chipping Sodbury Town Reserves, the victory was a welcome return to winning ways.
LION ROAR TO FIRST LEAGUE VICTORY
Lion 6 Oldland Abbotonians Reserves 3
Lion finally celebrated their first Division One victory of the season with a remarkable 6-3 success over Oldland Abbotonians Reserves.
After losing their opening three league matches, Lion had endured a difficult start to the campaign.
But they found their scoring touch in spectacular fashion.
Ryan Harris led the way with two goals, while Muhammed Abdulwahab, Rydian Boakye, Anas Koori and Kyran Thomson also found the net.
Oldland contributed three goals of their own through Vinni Griffin, Dexter Griffin and Joe Parsons.
But Lion's attacking display proved decisive.
The six goal performance was a dramatic improvement for a side that had struggled to find the net during the opening weeks.
More importantly, it delivered their first three league points of the season.
The victory lifts Lion off the bottom of Division One, leaving Longwell Green Sports Development at the foot of the table.
For Oldland, the defeat extended a difficult opening run.
For Lion, however, it was an afternoon worth celebrating.
Six goals.
Three points.
And finally, a first league victory.
MADE FOR EVER STORM BACK FROM TWO DOWN
Pucklechurch Sports 2 Made For Ever 6
Made For Ever produced an outstanding second half comeback to defeat Pucklechurch Sports 6-2 in difficult weather conditions.
After seeing their remarkable 39 match unbeaten run ended by Totterdown United in the County Cup the previous weekend, Made For Ever were determined to respond.
But they could hardly have made a more difficult start.
Pucklechurch began brightly despite the horrendous conditions and took an early lead when Harvey Foster rose highest to head home from a corner.
The hosts then doubled their advantage through Nqco Wilson, who produced an excellent strike from outside the penalty area.
At 2-0, Pucklechurch appeared to be in control.
Made For Ever, however, found a crucial breakthrough shortly before half time, reducing the deficit and giving themselves renewed belief.
The second half brought a dramatic change in momentum.
With Pucklechurch now playing into the swirling wind, Made For Ever took full advantage.
An early penalty brought the visitors level at 2-2.
From that point onwards, the game was largely played in the Pucklechurch half.
Made For Ever applied relentless pressure and added four further goals to complete an extraordinary turnaround.
Liam Atwell scored twice and collected the Man of the Match award.
Jake McCracken, Scott O'Brien and Archie Neill were also among the scorers.
Pucklechurch were left frustrated after such an encouraging opening period.
Their Man of the Match award went to captain Corey Jackson, who produced a committed performance despite the scoreline.
For Made For Ever, the result was the perfect response to their County Cup disappointment.
Six goals, three points and a reminder of the attacking quality that has made them one of Division One's strongest early contenders.
They remain unbeaten in league competition, with three wins from three matches.
DE VEYS AND WESTON FALL VICTIM TO WEATHER
De Veys P–P Lawrence Weston AFC
The scheduled Division One encounter between De Veys and Lawrence Weston was postponed due to the adverse weather conditions.
Both sides will now have to wait for another opportunity to add to their league points totals.
