The Uhlsport Bristol Premier Combination League and the Uhlsport Bristol & District League are pleased to announce a new joint initiative to fund the training of new referees — a programme designed to strengthen grassroots football and improve matchday delivery across both leagues.
This initiative will fully cover the cost of referee training for 10 club-nominated candidates, with courses delivered by the Gloucestershire FA in January 2026. By increasing the pool of qualified referees, the programme will enhance fixture coverage, reduce the risk of unaffiliated games, and support a more consistent and professional experience for teams across all divisions.
This is more than just a training scheme — it’s a chance to make a real difference in local football. Clubs, players, and supporters alike will benefit from improved officiating standards and greater reliability in match scheduling. If successful, the League intends to expand the programme in the 2026/27 season.
The initiative is being funded through A Bold Adventure — a grassroots fundraising effort created in memory of Adrian Bold, a long-serving referee, sports coach, and former President of Bristol Barcelona. Adrian was more than a football man; he was a mentor, a motivator, and a friend to many. Whether it was football, cricket, golf or simply getting people moving, Adrian inspired others to play, lead, and enjoy sport — always putting as much energy into the social side as the competition itself.
Following Adrian’s passing last year, his son Alex organised a charity football match and donated the proceeds to a young boy named Milo, who was raising money for sports equipment for his local orphanage. That act of kindness sparked something bigger — the creation of A Bold Adventure, a campaign dedicated to continuing Adrian’s legacy by supporting grassroots sport and helping underdogs and volunteers inspire others to play and have fun.
The League acknowledges Bristol Barcelona’s role in helping pave the way for this programme, and in particular recognises the efforts of Chris Barton, Secretary of Bristol Barcelona, who has worked closely with Matt Dyre to bring this initiative to life. Their collaboration has ensured that Adrian’s legacy is honoured in a way that delivers real, lasting benefits to the football community.
“This is a practical, forward-looking investment in the health of our leagues. It reflects the values Adrian stood for and the kind of football community we want to build,” said a League spokesperson.
